DEULA-Nienburg promotes craft training in Tanzania with welding course for vocational school teachers

In January 2024, two employees of DEULA-Nienburg traveled to Tanzania for a two-week assignment on behalf of the Westdeutscher Handwerkskammertag Düsseldorf. Their mission was to conduct a welding course for local vocational school teachers at an education center in the city of Babati.

Since April 2017, the Dual Apprenticeship Training and Development in Agriculture Technology (DAT) project has been in operation in Tanzania. This initiative is a collaboration between the Westdeutscher Handwerkskammertag (WHKT Düsseldorf) and the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) in Tanzania. The project aims to introduce dual vocational training for agricultural and construction machinery mechanics at selected education centers.

The project has seen great success at an education center in the rural Manyara region, located in the heart of East Africa. Since 2019, approximately 25 young individuals commence their dual craft-based vocational training there annually.

Several further training opportunities for small-scale farmers and regional craft businesses complement the offerings developed through this project. Additionally, the project receives funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Twelve teachers from various education centers in Tanzania participated in the welding course. All participants showed keen interest and were pleased with the presence of German experts. They highly valued German expertise and expressed gratitude for the experts traveling to Tanzania to help local teachers enhance their skills.

The goal of the course was to train local vocational school teachers in MAG welding, enabling them to pass on the newly acquired knowledge to their students.

Key contents of the course included:

1. Material science: Weldability of steels and alternative connection methods
2. Structure, function, and adjustment of MAG welding equipment
3. Identifying and resolving issues in MAG welding
4. Recognizing, evaluating, and addressing errors in the weld seam
5. Welding exercises on different material thicknesses
6. Creating a project in small groups
7. Joint creation of training materials for instructors and trainees

For DEULA-Nienburg, conducting this project on-site was a highly positive experience.
